Here are three lessons we can learn from a Firefly.
1. Illuminate
Fireflies or lightning bugs are a type of beetle that have organs in their lower abdomen that illuminate either yellow, green, or orange. The males use this to put on a romantic light show to attract a female. As Christians, we were created to illuminate God in a dark, lost world. We should be shining the light of Jesus so others can see the love God has for each of us. Let's display a lovely light show that points others to Christ and turns eyes upward.
Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle. - Psalm 43:3
Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. - Psalm 119:104-105
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. - Matthew 5:14-16
“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! - Matthew 6:22-23
“Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. - Matthew 10:27-28
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. - 2 Corinthians 4:6
2. Pursue
As mentioned in point one, male fireflies put on a lovely light show for the females to attract a mate. So next time you look out the window at night and see beautiful, sparkling, mini star-like lights blinking outside, remember the love that Christ has for you. He created every detail of all creation; everything including the stars and fireflies. God pursues each one of us as if we are the only human-created. We need to actively and intentionally pursue God daily in return. He knows everything about us, we should try to know as much as we can about Him. When you truly love someone you are patient, understanding, trusting, faithful, loyal, you honor and adore them (respect deeply). If you truly love God, you should desire to be with Him, talk to Him, and listen to Him each day.
Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. - 1 Thessalonians 5:14-22
But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. - 1 Timothy 6:11-12
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! - Psalm 46:10
Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. - Psalm 100:3-4
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. - Isaiah 40:28
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. - Proverbs 1:7
For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; - Prverbs 2:6
3. Unison
Some fireflies synchronize their lights in unison. God calls us to be set apart from the world and be unified in our faith. We are to be of one mind and body, in unison worshipping and obeying our Creator, working diligently and cheerfully together, and edifying one another. First, love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, then, love others as God loves us.
Jesus said to him,“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. - Matthew 22:37-38
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” - John 13:34-35
Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contraryblessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. - 1 Peter 3:8-9
but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. - Ephesians 4:15-16
Therefore, putting away lying,“Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. - Ephesians 4:25-32
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being. - 1 Corinthians 10:23-24
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. - Romans 15:4-6
